Dairy farmers John and Mary Morgan have been working in the dairy industry for 45 years, and for the past 20 years have worked their own farm, snug in the rolling hills of the Bass Coast. Just over an hour’s drive from Melbourne, this 118-acre dairy farm is in a beautiful location only 15 minutes from Phillip Island.

The house was solid, but dated. In fact the lack of a spruce up was a testament to how hardworking Mary and John are – that their 4 bedroom farmhouse remained in its original condition, while they worked to keep their farm afloat.

A well-loved vegetable garden and orchid greenhouse were proof of the love they have for the land. But for John and Mary, being dairy farmers wasn’t what it used to be. The price slashing that affected the industry country-wide was the final straw, and it prompted the couple to look at retirement, which meant giving up their home of 20 years.

It was a difficult time to sell with the dairy industry struggling, possibly scaring any potential buyers. So it was obvious that if someone was to invest in this gorgeous slice of Victoria, the farmhouse had to become the centrepiece and an inspirational country cottage.

Interior

The style inside the property was a product of its generation. Shaynna could easily see its potential, so she gave it the modern boost it needed.

The interior walls of the living room were a mix of dated red brick and plasterboard. So the red brick was covered up and the walls were painted in a country grey. The dizzying carpet was swapped for a modern plush carpet and new light fittings were hung between the exposed beam ceilings. The Luxaflex Roman Shades also helped with giving the space a more modern touch, moving away from the brown dated curtains to a clean fabric and better-fitted form. The soft translucency brought gentle, filtered light in, improving quality of the entire space by a multitude. Installing a new wood burning fireplace and moving it to the centre of the room now made it the cozy focus point of the long lounge room.

In the kitchen, the dated linoleum flooring was replaced with a new dark timber floating floor to enhance the kitchen’s country charm. The unusual bench was removed and replaced with a kitchen island including an adjoining dining table. This layout created a functional and visual flow between the kitchen and dining. The bulky curtains were removed and exchanged with Luxaflex Roman Shades in the dining area, and Roller Blinds over the kitchen, offering more control over the amount and angles of light entering the space. The Roller Blinds were essential in the kitchen, reducing the late-afternoon glare when preparing meals.

The bedrooms were all great sizes and had built-ins, so were just updated with new carpet, fresh paint, and new bed linen. Luxaflex blockout roller blinds were installed for better light control and versatility. The white tones from the blind fabric and the fresh coat of paint lit up the room, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The change in blinds and carpet removed the feeling of clutter, giving the rooms the illusion of more living space.

The bathroom had new white floor tiles laid, and a respray gave it a fresh lease on life.

Exterior

Charlie used weatherboards to cover the red brick frontage. This gave the home more of a country cottage look, fitting in better with its surroundings. By clearing the entrance to the house and adding some potted plants in rustic half wine barrels, the front of the property now looked more inviting.

Mary had maintained a gorgeous vegetable garden and kid friendly back yard. Charlie’s goal was to enhance this already peaceful space by creating a paved entertaining area. Using crazy pave stones, he formed a rectangular patio area and dressed it with an outdoor dining setting and more beautiful planting.
